Barberry, Berberis vulgaris
Parts used: Root and stem bark.
Constituents: Alkaloids, Chelidonic acid, Tannins, Wax, Resin, Vit C, Magnesium.
Actions: Appetite Stimulant, Cholagogue, Antibacterial, Spleen Tonic, Antioxidant, Anti-emetic, Anti-inflammatory.
Dyspepsia, gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, candidiasis, constipation, will increase peristalsis, cholelithiasis, jaundice.
Specific to E coli, staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus viridins, pseudomonas aeruginosa, salmonella typhi.
Increases blood circulation to the spleen, resulting increased phagocyte production.
For after chemotherapy, increases white blood cells (leukocytopenia), inhibits lipid peroxidation.
Herbal extract: 20-40mL per week.
Energetics: Bitter, astringent, cool, dry. Dosha: PK- V+.
Meridians: spleen, stomach, liver, gallbladder.
